Responsibility for our materials

As a manufacturer of semi-finished products of copper and copper alloys, Wieland enjoys an excellent reputation. As a business partner, you will purchase a variety of different copper and copper alloy products from us. Some products may contain legally regulated alloy components. Wieland is aware of its responsibility and provides all necessary information for the safe use of its materials.

Substances manufactured or imported into the EU by companies must be registered at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). This also extends to metals. Recycled substances are excluded from this registration. At Wieland, we use exclusively registered or recycled metals.

What is the purpose of REACH?
REACH is a regulation issued by the European Union. Passed in June 2007, it is intended to protect human health and the environment against the potential risks of chemicals. The name is short for “Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals”.

Especially substances of very high concern (SVHCs) are potential candidates for an authorisation procedure under the REACH regulation. From the listed substances in the SVHC candidate list some of our materials may contain lead as an alloy component greater than 0.1 % by weight.

According to Art 33 of the REACH regulation we fulfil in this case our obligation to inform unprompted our customers.

Substances subject to authorization are listed in Annex XIV to the REACH regulation. On expiry of the so called sunset date, these substances may be used for those applications only that the European Commission has authorized explicitly. The substances listed in Annex XIV are not contained in our articles!

The semi-finished products of copper and copper alloys that Wieland delivers are products as defined in the REACH regulation for which no safety data sheets need be provided. Notwithstanding, we are pleased to provide you with the material safety data sheets on our semi-finished products.

The European RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU) and the European Directive on end-of-life vehicles (2000/53/EC) restrict the content of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic devices and in vehicles.

Semi-finished products and products made of copper and copper alloys not only have to meet numerous technical requirements, but are also subject to a comprehensive set of regulations aimed at the products' impact on the environment and health. These regulations often depend on the particular application of the semi-finished products.

For inquiries regarding other directives and regulations (e.g. radioactivity, POPs, PFOS, WEEE, etc.) , IMDS (International Material Data System - database of the automotive industry), CAMDS (China Automotive Material Data System) and BOMcheck (substance declaration tool of the electronics industry) please contact:

“Conflict minerals” is the name given to the raw materials tantalum, tin, gold, and tungsten when their mining and trade contributes to the financing of armed groups. This applies particularly in the Democratic Republic (DR) of the Congo or its neighboring states. This is defined in greater detail e.g. in Dodd–Frank. Wieland uses tin as an alloying element in a number of materials. In addition, the surfaces of some products are tin plated. We make sure through our supply sources that the tin we use is not a conflict mineral.

What is Dodd–Frank?

Dodd–Frank is a US federal law that was passed in July 2010 to reform the US financial market laws. It obliges listed companies to practice greater transparency. Among other things, companies must disclose the extent to which they use raw materials originating from the DR of the Congo or its neighboring states and why conflict minerals are needed for their production.

Wieland-Werke supplies semi-finished products made of copper and copper alloys as well as ingots for remelting in foundries. We provide information sheets for semi-finished products and safety data sheets for ingots.

Information sheets for articles

Semi-finished products made of copper and copper alloys are articles within the meaning of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH Regulation).

For articles there is no legal obligation to issue a safety data sheet. However, to be able to provide information typically included in a safety data sheet also for articles, we have developed information sheets for articles.

We expressly point out that the information sheet for articles is a voluntary information sheet which is not subject to the formal requirements of the REACH Regulation.

The information sheets are available in two languages (German/English).

Safety data sheets for ingots

Ingots of copper and copper alloys are mixtures in the meaning of the REACH regulation.

For these mixtures we provide safety data sheets in two languages (German/English).
